The game

Snooker, played properly

Snooker is the long game: a full-size table, 15 reds, six colours and frames won on points. Chalk Rivals plays it to full rules, with free balls, play-again after a foul and a re-spotted black when the scores finish level.

Play a rival in the lobby, practise on your own with no clock, or learn the controls in the tutorial. It runs in any modern browser on desktop, tablet and phone.

Rules

How to play Snooker

The rules the table plays by, shot for shot. Fouls and the shot clock are below.

  1. Reds, then a colour

While reds remain, pot a red, then a colour, then a red again. Potted colours come back to their spots.

  2. The colours in order

Once the reds are gone, pot the colours in order: yellow (2), green (3), brown (4), blue (5), pink (6) and black (7).

  3. Scoring

Each red is worth 1 point. The highest score at the end of the frame wins. The maximum break is 147.

  4. Free ball

Snookered after a foul? You get a free ball: nominate any colour to play as if it were the ball on.

  5. A level frame

If the scores are level after the black, the black is re-spotted and played again to decide the frame.

Fouls

Fouls and penalties

A foul gives your opponent at least 4 points. They play from where the balls lie, or make you play again.

Pro rules are a table option: call the colour and its pocket.

  • The cue ball is potted.
  • No ball is hit.
  • The first ball hit is not the ball on.
  • A ball that is not on is potted.
  • Two colours are potted after a red.
  • The 45-second shot clock runs out.
Controls

Your cue, your stroke

No aiming lines and no ghost ball. The cue ball goes where your stroke sends it.

Aim

Hold the left mouse button and drag, or drag a finger on a phone. Hold Ctrl (or use Fine aim) for small adjustments.

Shoot

Right-drag down to draw the cue back, then forward through the ball. On a phone, switch to Shoot and do the same with one finger. A faster stroke hits harder.

Spin and elevation

Pick the contact point on the cue ball for top, back or side spin, and raise the cue for a swerve or a jump.

Views

Play from the cue view, walk round the table in 3D, or look straight down in 2D.

Online

Play Snooker against real players

Online, every match starts with a challenge: tap a player's name in the lobby, pick one frame, best of 3 or best of 5, and rated or casual. A rated match moves your rating once, on who wins the match, so a 2-0 and a 2-1 count the same. There are no aiming lines for anyone, in any mode.

FAQ

Snooker questions

Is online snooker free here?

Yes. Every table and mode is free. The store sells looks only.

Is it a full-size snooker table?

Yes, with all 15 reds. For a shorter frame, Quick Snooker uses six reds on a smaller table.

What is the maximum break?

147: fifteen reds, each followed by the black, then all six colours.

What is a free ball in snooker?

If a foul leaves you snookered, you may nominate any colour as the ball on for that shot.

Can I practise break building?

Yes. Practice tables have no shot clock, so you can work on positional play at your own pace.
